THANKSGIVING 2026 PAYROLL GUIDE

Thursday, November 26, 2026 · U.S. employee and employer payroll guide

Do you get time and a half on Thanksgiving 2026? Not automatically. Federal law generally does not require a private-sector employer to pay extra solely because an employee works on Thanksgiving. Time and a half, double pay, or paid holiday leave may apply under an employer policy, employment agreement, collective bargaining agreement, state law, or a separate public-sector pay system.

Covered, nonexempt employees also generally qualify for federal overtime after more than 40 hours actually worked in the employer's defined workweek. An applicable holiday premium and a statutory overtime premium are not automatically two separate payments that must both be added in full.

Quick Answer: How Much Is Thanksgiving Pay?

For eight Thanksgiving hours at a regular rate of $20 per hour, the gross earnings for that shift would be $160 at 1×, $240 at 1.5×, or $320 at 2×. Use the multiplier that actually applies to your job. The federal holiday designation alone does not establish that multiplier.

If your workweek exceeds 40 hours, your final payroll calculation may require a separate overtime and premium-credit review. See the U.S. Department of Labor's holiday-pay and overtime guidance .

Is Thanksgiving a Paid Holiday in 2026?

Thanksgiving is a federal holiday on Thursday, November 26, 2026. That does not automatically entitle every private-sector employee to a paid day off or premium pay for working.

The Fair Labor Standards Act does not generally require payment for holidays not worked or an additional premium solely for working on a holiday. Employer policies, agreements, state rules, and separate federal-employee systems can provide different benefits.

Confirm the holiday date on the official federal holiday calendar . For the general private-sector baseline, see the Department of Labor's FLSA questions and answers .

Identify which Thanksgiving arrangement applies before calculating your paycheck.
Your situation What to verify Possible treatment
Thanksgiving off Paid-holiday eligibility Paid or unpaid leave under the applicable rules
Thanksgiving worked Holiday-work premium policy Regular pay, 1.5×, 2×, or another applicable arrangement
More than 40 hours worked Defined workweek and overtime eligibility Separate statutory overtime review
Holiday worked and additional holiday-leave benefit Whether both payments are separately due Work earnings and any genuinely separate leave payment
Covered federal employee OPM rules and holiday tour of duty A distinct federal holiday-pay system
Before using the calculator

Check your employer's holiday policy or the applicable agreement. The calculator cannot decide whether you are legally entitled to a particular premium.

Thanksgiving 2026 Holiday Pay Calculator

Use this tool to organize a simple hourly employee's gross earnings. It separates other hours worked, hours worked on Thanksgiving, additional holiday premium, and separately paid holiday leave.

The tool does not calculate taxes, net pay, or a final legal overtime entitlement. It highlights when the workweek needs a separate review.

Start With a Worked Example

A fictional employee earns $20 per hour, works 32 ordinary hours plus eight Thanksgiving hours, and is entitled under an applicable employer policy to 1.5× pay for those eight holiday hours.

Other earnings: 32 × $20 = $640
Thanksgiving base earnings: 8 × $20 = $160
Additional holiday premium: 8 × $20 × 0.5 = $80
Illustrative gross earnings: $880

The $160 base amount plus the $80 premium equals $240 for the Thanksgiving shift. Do not add that $240 again to the $880 total. The employee worked 40 hours in this example.

Important limitation

A premium paid for Thanksgiving and overtime compensation required by law can interact. If your actual worked hours exceed 40 or other overtime rules apply, do not use the calculator subtotal as the final amount owed. Review the complete workweek and applicable premium-credit rules.

Three Thanksgiving Paycheck Scenarios

The following examples use a fictional employee earning $20 per hour. They demonstrate three different questions: when a shift crosses midnight, when paid hours exceed worked hours, and when an actual workweek exceeds 40 hours.

Scenario 1: Your Thanksgiving Shift Ends on Black Friday

Suppose your shift begins at 10:00 p.m. Thursday, November 26, and ends at 6:00 a.m. Friday, November 27. For this example, all eight hours are worked and there is no unpaid break.

Assume your employer's policy pays 1.5× only for hours actually worked during Thanksgiving Thursday. The policy in this fictional example does not provide a separate Black Friday premium.

Thursday, November 26 10 p.m. – midnight

Two Thanksgiving hours at the applicable 1.5× rate.

Friday, November 27 Midnight – 6 a.m.

Six Black Friday hours at the regular rate under this example's policy.

Shift component Calculation Gross earnings
Thanksgiving work 2 hours × $30 $60.00
Black Friday work 6 hours × $20 $120.00
Shift total 8 hours worked $180.00

The entire shift lasts eight hours, but only two hours fall within Thanksgiving Thursday in this particular employer-policy example.

Your actual result may differ. An employer may define a qualifying holiday shift differently, provide a Black Friday premium, or be subject to a different contractual or legal requirement. Verify the actual policy before using the example to challenge a paycheck or prepare payroll.

Scenario 2: Your Stub Shows 48 Paid Hours but No Overtime

Suppose you actually work 40 hours during the defined workweek and your employer separately provides eight hours of paid Thanksgiving leave for time not worked.

The applicable benefit may create 48 compensated hours even though you worked only 40 hours.

Earnings category Hours Amount
Regular hours actually worked 40 $800.00
Separate paid holiday leave 8 $160.00
Total compensated hours 48 $960.00
Hours actually worked 40 Not an additional payment

Under the general federal hours-worked framework, paid holiday leave for time not worked does not automatically create overtime hours.

Therefore, the absence of a separate OT line is not by itself proof that this fictional paycheck is incorrect. A more generous employer agreement, applicable state rule, or other pay system may provide a different result.

Compare the work dates and payroll categories rather than treating the total of 48 paid hours as 48 hours actually worked. Our pay stub and timecard troubleshooting guide explains how to trace those differences.

Scenario 3: You Actually Work 48 Hours Including Thanksgiving

Suppose the employee works 40 hours on other days and eight more hours on Thanksgiving. A genuine holiday-work policy pays 1.5× for those eight hours.

Component Calculation Amount
Other worked hours 40 × $20 $800.00
Thanksgiving base earnings 8 × $20 $160.00
Additional holiday premium 8 × $10 $80.00
Initial earnings subtotal 48 hours actually worked $1,040.00
$1,040 is a preliminary subtotal, not a universal final payroll answer.

The employee actually worked more than 40 hours. Payroll must evaluate the applicable statutory overtime amount, regular rate, and whether the holiday premium qualifies for a permitted overtime credit.

Under federal rules, certain genuine holiday premiums paid at a qualifying rate may be excluded from the regular-rate calculation and credited toward the overtime premium otherwise due. This is why simply adding another entire 1.5× payment to the eight Thanksgiving hours can double count compensation.

Review the Department of Labor's regular-rate and premium-payment rules and the federal overtime fact sheet .

A biweekly paycheck does not create one 80-hour overtime test.

For most covered, nonexempt employees, the federal calculation is based on each defined workweek. Do not average a 48-hour week against a 32-hour week to erase overtime. The ePaystubs pay-period guide explains the difference between a payroll period and a workweek.

How to Check Thanksgiving Pay on Your Pay Stub

A pay stub may use REG, HOL, HOL WORK, HOL PREM, PTO, OT, or a different set of payroll codes. There is no universal holiday-pay abbreviation used by every employer.

First determine which hours were actually worked. Then identify any separately paid leave, applicable premium, and overtime amount. Finally, confirm that gross earnings reconcile without counting one payment twice.

Fictional Thanksgiving Earnings Statement Example: 32 other hours and eight Thanksgiving hours at an applicable 1.5× rate
REG
32 hours × $20
$640.00
HOL WORK
8 Thanksgiving hours × $20
$160.00
HOL PREM
Additional 0.5× on 8 hours
$80.00
Actual hours worked 40.00
Current gross earnings $880.00
Educational example only. The $160 holiday-work base amount and $80 premium together equal $240 for the Thanksgiving shift. This display intentionally omits tax withholding, employee deductions, net pay, and YTD amounts rather than inventing them. It is not an employer-issued payroll document.

Preparing a Pay Stub From Verified Payroll Records?

Employers and authorized payroll preparers can use ePaystubs to prepare pay statements from genuine earnings, withholding, and deduction information.

Confirm the correct holiday earnings and how the available creator fields should represent them before preparing a statement. Do not assume the creator automatically determines every holiday premium or resolves complex overtime arrangements.

Is Thanksgiving Time-and-a-Half Pay Tax-Free in 2026?

Not automatically. The federal deduction for qualified overtime compensation is not a general exemption for all earnings paid at time and a half.

Under the IRS's August 2026 guidance, qualified overtime compensation generally concerns the eligible overtime premium required by section 7 of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Compensation that is not FLSA-required overtime is not automatically eligible merely because an employer calls it “overtime” or pays it at a 1.5× rate.

For example, an employee who works 40 hours in total and receives an extra Thanksgiving premium solely under the employer's holiday policy should not assume that the holiday-only premium qualifies for the federal overtime deduction.

The IRS's updated August 2026 qualified-overtime guidance replaced its earlier FAQ version.

A possible tax deduction does not mean tax-free paychecks.

Overtime compensation generally remains included in wages subject to payroll withholding and employment taxes. Employees should not remove federal withholding, Social Security, or Medicare from a pay stub merely because they expect to qualify for an income-tax deduction.

For the separate withholding and W-2 reporting questions, read why overtime is still taxed in 2026 .

Do State Laws or Federal Employee Rules Change Thanksgiving Pay?

They can. The general federal private-sector baseline does not replace applicable state requirements, employer contracts, collective bargaining agreements, or specialized public-sector rules.

State-Specific Holiday Pay

For example, Rhode Island has legal-holiday premium provisions for covered situations, subject to exemptions and other applicable requirements.

California generally does not require a special premium solely because an employee works on a holiday, although its separate overtime rules and enforceable agreements may still affect pay.

Consult the relevant state agency: Rhode Island legal-holiday guidance and California's holiday-pay FAQ .

Covered Federal Employees

Covered federal employees may receive separate holiday benefits and qualifying holiday premium pay under the Office of Personnel Management's rules. The specific result depends on the employee's coverage, tour of duty, holiday scheduling, and other applicable provisions.

The OPM holiday work schedules and pay guidance explains that separate system. Do not apply it automatically to a private-sector position.

Will Thanksgiving 2026 Delay My Paycheck or Direct Deposit?

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, and affects the Federal Reserve's ordinary holiday processing schedule. This is a payment-timing question, not a change to the holiday-pay rate.

If Thursday is your normal payday, check your employer's official pay date, the payroll provider's submission deadline, the ACH effective date, and your bank's funds-availability policy. Do not assume every employer moves payday to Wednesday or Friday.

See the Federal Reserve holiday and FedACH schedule for the banking calendar.

Thanksgiving Payroll Checklist for Employers

Before preparing a statement, verify the employee's actual work records and the specific holiday-pay arrangement that applies. A multiplier calculation alone does not establish the correct final payroll amount.

Continue with the 2026 year-end payroll checklist when closing November and December payroll records.

Prepare a Pay Stub Using Confirmed Payroll Figures

Once the employee's hours, applicable holiday premium, overtime treatment, gross earnings, and deductions have been verified, open the ePaystubs creator.

Check that the available input fields can represent your actual payroll arrangement accurately. An employee requesting an existing employer-issued statement should obtain the original record from the employer or payroll provider.

Thanksgiving 2026 Pay FAQs

Do you get time and a half on Thanksgiving 2026?

Not automatically under the general federal private-sector holiday-pay rules. A premium may apply under an employer policy, contract, state rule, public-sector system, or applicable overtime requirement.

Is Thanksgiving automatically double pay?

No. There is no universal federal private-sector double-pay rate solely for working Thanksgiving. Check the arrangement that governs your job.

How much is eight hours of Thanksgiving pay at $20 per hour?

The gross shift amount is $160 at 1×, $240 at an applicable 1.5× rate, or $320 at an applicable 2× rate. These figures exclude taxes, deductions, and any separate workweek overtime review.

Do paid Thanksgiving hours count toward federal overtime?

Paid leave for holiday time not worked does not automatically count as hours actually worked toward the general federal 40-hour workweek threshold. The applicable contract, state law, or special pay system may provide a different benefit.

Can I get Thanksgiving premium pay and overtime?

Different pay provisions may apply during the same workweek. However, certain qualifying holiday premiums may be credited toward statutory overtime compensation. Payroll must evaluate the actual arrangement rather than automatically stacking every premium.

Does a Thanksgiving overnight shift receive the holiday rate for every hour?

Not necessarily. The applicable policy, agreement, or legal rule determines which hours qualify. A shift crossing from Thanksgiving into Black Friday may require the hours to be separated under that arrangement.

Is Black Friday also a paid holiday?

Not automatically under the general federal private-sector rule. An employer may provide a separate Black Friday benefit or premium. Check the actual policy and any other applicable requirements.

Is Thanksgiving holiday premium tax-free in 2026?

Not automatically. A holiday-only premium is not necessarily qualified overtime compensation for the federal deduction. Eligibility depends on the applicable FLSA and IRS requirements.

What should I do if my Thanksgiving pay stub looks incorrect?

Compare the correct pay-period dates, approved timecard, hours actually worked, holiday policy, earnings codes, and gross amount. Ask your employer or payroll provider to explain any unresolved difference and correct an actual payroll error.
