How to Convert Salary to Hourly Pay
The standard formula is:
For a $60,000 annual salary at 40 hours per week for 52 weeks:
$60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 per hour.
If you know only monthly, biweekly or weekly gross pay, the calculator first converts that amount to an annual equivalent before finding the hourly value.
Standard Hourly Equivalent vs Effective Hourly Value
A standard hourly equivalent normalizes salary to a schedule such as 40 hours × 52 weeks. Effective hourly value divides the same compensation by the hours you actually work.
| $75,000 Salary | Annual Hours | Effective Gross/Hour |
|---|---|---|
| 40 hrs/week | 2,080 | $36.06 |
| 45 hrs/week | 2,340 | $32.05 |
| 50 hrs/week | 2,600 | $28.85 |
| 55 hrs/week | 2,860 | $26.22 |
| 60 hrs/week | 3,120 | $24.04 |

Does Paid PTO Change the Calculation?
For a standard conversion of an annual salary that continues during paid vacation, paid PTO normally does not reduce annual salary. You can separately exclude paid time off if you want to measure compensation only against hours physically worked.
Unpaid time off: can reduce actual annual earnings depending on the arrangement.
Biweekly vs Semimonthly Salary Pay
Biweekly and semimonthly are different payroll schedules. A $72,000 salary across 26 biweekly checks is approximately $2,769.23 per check. Across 24 semimonthly checks it is $3,000.
Some biweekly payroll calendars contain 27 scheduled paydays. If your employer's actual calendar has 27 checks, use 27 in the calculator.
See What Is a Pay Period? for a deeper explanation.
Hourly to Salary With Overtime
A basic hourly × 2,080 calculation can miss overtime. At $25/hour, 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours at an entered 1.5× multiplier:
- Regular weekly gross: $1,000
- Example overtime: $187.50/week
- Total weekly gross: $1,187.50
- Annual gross across 52 such weeks: $61,750
The overtime result is an estimate based on the multiplier entered. It does not establish the legal FLSA regular rate.
Does Salary Automatically Mean Exempt From Overtime?
No. Salary alone does not determine overtime eligibility. Federal executive, administrative and professional exemptions generally involve applicable salary-basis, salary-level and duties requirements.
As of 2026, the U.S. Department of Labor applies a federal salary level of $684 per week ($35,568 annually) for the salary-level component of most of these exemptions after the 2024 overtime rule was vacated. State rules can differ.
Hourly Equivalent vs FLSA Regular Rate
The hourly equivalent on this page is a compensation-comparison number. It does not automatically establish the legal regular rate used in overtime calculations. Workweek compensation, actual hours and certain bonuses or commissions can matter.
How to Verify the Result Against Your Pay Stub
- Confirm weekly, biweekly, semimonthly or monthly payroll.
- Check the actual number of scheduled paychecks.
- Compare expected regular gross with gross earnings shown.
- If hourly, verify rate and regular hours.
- Check overtime separately.
- If gross is correct but net is lower, review taxes and deductions.

Why Your Pay Stub May Not Match
| What You See | What to Check |
|---|---|
| About $2,769 instead of $3,000 on $72k salary | Biweekly (26) vs semimonthly (24) |
| First check is smaller | Partial first pay period |
| Hourly gross looks low | Rate and recorded hours |
| Overtime missing | Workweek hours and overtime status |
| Gross is correct but net is low | Taxes, benefits and deductions |
How We Checked This Calculator
Gross-pay formulas: We verify the calculator against independently solvable salary, hourly and pay-frequency examples.
Payroll logic: Biweekly, semimonthly and paycheck-count examples are kept separate so a 24-check schedule is not treated as a 26-check schedule.
Overtime guidance: Federal overtime and salary-exemption statements are checked against current U.S. Department of Labor guidance. The calculator does not make a legal exemption determination.
Public Formula Checks
