2026 calculation methodology

Federal withholding uses the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction for your Form W-4 filing status, with Step 2(c), Step 3 and Step 4 inputs. Mississippi withholding follows Publication 89-700 for 2026: annualized wages minus the standard deduction and your Form 89-350 exemptions, 0% on the first $10,000 and 4% on the rest, divided by pay periods and rounded to the nearest dollar, plus any extra amount. Social Security is 6.2% up to $184,500 and Medicare is 1.45%, plus 0.9% above $200,000. See the worked example and test cases below.

What You Should Know About Mississippi Paychecks

Mississippi's income tax rate dropped to 4% for 2026, and it only applies above the first $10,000 of taxable wages. Before that, your employer subtracts a standard deduction and the exemptions on your Form 89-350. On a $60,000 salary filing single, that's $64 per biweekly paycheck.

The rate keeps falling: 3.75% in 2027 and down to 3% by 2030 under a 2025 law. Mississippi rounds withholding to the whole dollar, so the state line on your stub shows no cents.

There's no city income tax, no state disability or paid leave deduction and no state minimum wage, so the federal $7.25 applies.

2026 Mississippi Withholding Formula

Publication 89-700 for 2026 sets out the percentage method. Your employer annualizes your wages, subtracts the standard deduction and your exemptions, taxes what's left above $10,000 at 4%, then divides by pay periods and rounds to the dollar.

2026 Mississippi standard deductions and exemptions
Form 89-350 status Standard deduction Exemption Total taken off wages
Single$2,300$6,000$8,300
Married, spouse not working$4,600$12,000$16,600
Married, both working (even split)$2,300$6,000$8,300
Head of family$3,400$9,500$12,900
No Form 89-350$2,300$0$2,300
Each dependent, or age 65 or blind$1,500$1,500 more
The $10,000 zero band: After those amounts come off, the first $10,000 is taxed at 0%. A single filer owes no Mississippi withholding until annual wages pass $18,300, which is why a full-time $7.25 an hour job has none.

Mississippi's Income Tax Cuts, 2025 to 2030

The 2025 Build Up Mississippi Act lowers the rate a quarter point a year. Here's what each rate means for the same $60,000 single biweekly paycheck, using 2026 deductions and exemptions.

Mississippi withholding on a $60,000 biweekly salary by tax year
Tax year Rate above $10,000 Mississippi tax per paycheck Tax per year
20254.4%$71$1,835
20264%$64$1,668
20273.75%$60$1,564
20283.5%$56$1,460
20293.25%$52$1,355
20303%$48$1,251
After 2030: More cuts happen only when state revenue beats set targets, with a long-run goal of no income tax. Per-paycheck figures are rounded to the dollar the way employers withhold; yearly figures are the annual formula result.

Form 89-350: How Your Choices Change Your Paycheck

Mississippi doesn't use your federal W-4. Your employer needs Form 89-350, and without one it withholds with no exemption. Here's what each choice does to a $60,000 biweekly paycheck.

Effect of Form 89-350 choices on Mississippi withholding, $60,000 salary, biweekly (2026)
Form 89-350 choice Mississippi tax per paycheck Take-home pay
No Form 89-350$73$1,865.07
Single$64$1,874.07
Single, 1 dependent$62$1,876.07
Single, 2 dependents$60$1,878.07
Head of family$57$1,881.07
Married, spouse not working$51$1,887.07
Single, plus $10 extra$74$1,864.07
Exempt$0$1,938.07
How to read this: Each $1,500 dependent exemption is worth about $2 per biweekly paycheck. Take-home figures use federal Single so only the Form 89-350 choice changes.

How to Calculate Your Mississippi Paycheck

A Mississippi paycheck goes from gross pay to take-home pay in four steps. The state step is the 4% income tax after the $10,000 zero band, which this calculator runs for you.

1

Calculate gross pay

Divide salary by pay periods, or multiply the hourly rate by regular hours and add overtime at 1.5 times the rate after 40 hours in a week.

4

Calculate Mississippi tax

Annualize wages, subtract the standard deduction and Form 89-350 exemptions, tax everything above $10,000 at 4%, divide by pay periods and round to the dollar. Then subtract post-tax deductions.

Mississippi Withholding Worked Example: $60,000 Salary, Biweekly

Mississippi Paycheck Tax Calculator: How Mississippi Withholding Works

A Mississippi paycheck calculator has one state line to get right: the 4% income tax after deductions, exemptions and the $10,000 zero band. On your pay stub it usually appears as SIT or MS state withholding. Our pay stub abbreviations list explains the other codes.

Federal Withholding for Mississippi Paychecks

Federal withholding uses your Form W-4 and the 2026 federal brackets. The calculator supports filing status, Step 2(c), Step 3 credits and Step 4(a), 4(b) and 4(c). If you claim the new overtime or tips deductions, our W-4 Step 4(b) worksheet guide shows how to enter them, and our 2026 federal tax withholding guide covers the rest.

Working Across State Lines

Mississippi has no reciprocal agreements. If you live in Louisiana, Alabama or Arkansas and work in Mississippi, your employer withholds Mississippi tax and your home state gives you a credit. Tennessee residents working in Mississippi pay Mississippi tax with nothing to offset it at home.

Bonuses

Mississippi has no flat bonus rate. Your employer adds the bonus to your regular wages for the pay period and withholds on the total, which can push that paycheck's withholding up. Federal withholding (usually a flat 22%) and FICA apply too. See why bonuses are taxed so high.

Employer Payroll Costs in Mississippi

Employers pay state unemployment insurance on the first $14,000 of each employee's wages. None of it comes out of your pay. At year-end, our W-2 form generator can use the same wage and withholding totals.

Why Your Actual Mississippi Paycheck May Differ

This calculator is a close estimate, not your employer's payroll run. Your Form 89-350 on file, whole-dollar rounding, how you and your spouse split the married exemption, benefit elections, year-to-date wages and a 27th biweekly payday in some years can all move the result a little. Three-paycheck months change monthly cash flow but not the tax on each check. For a full checklist, see why your paycheck is lower than expected.

The calculator now applies the 2026 4% rate with the $10,000 zero band, standard deductions and Form 89-350 exemptions, rounded to the dollar. We added the formula table, the 2025 to 2030 rate cut schedule, a Form 89-350 comparison, a state comparison, a worked example and the test cases above. We re-check this page whenever the Department of Revenue or the IRS publishes new tables, and at least once a year each January.

Mississippi Paycheck Calculator FAQ

Does Mississippi have a state income tax?
Yes. For 2026 Mississippi taxes income above $10,000 at a flat 4%, down from 4.4% in 2025. The rate is scheduled to drop by 0.25 points a year until it reaches 3% in 2030. No Mississippi city taxes wages.
How much tax is taken out of a Mississippi paycheck?
On a $60,000 salary paid biweekly, filing single, $433.62 comes out of each $2,307.69 paycheck: $193.08 federal income tax, $143.08 Social Security, $33.46 Medicare and $64 Mississippi income tax. That leaves $1,874.07.
How does Mississippi figure withholding?
Your employer annualizes your wages and subtracts a standard deduction ($2,300 single, $4,600 married, $3,400 head of family) and your Form 89-350 exemptions ($6,000 single, $12,000 married, $9,500 head of family, plus $1,500 per dependent). The first $10,000 of what's left is taxed at 0% and the rest at 4%. The yearly amount is divided by pay periods and rounded to the dollar.
What is Form 89-350?
It's Mississippi's employee withholding exemption certificate, the state version of the W-4. You list your filing status and the dollar value of your exemptions. If you don't file one, your employer withholds with no exemption, which costs a single $60,000 earner about $9 more per biweekly paycheck.
How do married couples who both work fill out Form 89-350?
The $12,000 married exemption is split between the spouses in any way they choose, and each uses the $2,300 standard deduction. This calculator's "married, both working" option assumes an even split of $6,000 each.
How are bonuses taxed in Mississippi?
Mississippi has no flat supplemental rate. Employers add the bonus to regular wages for that pay period and withhold as if it were one payment. Federal withholding, usually a flat 22%, and FICA apply too.
What is Mississippi's minimum wage?
Mississippi has no state minimum wage law, so the federal $7.25 an hour applies to most jobs. Tipped employees can be paid $2.13 an hour in cash wages if tips bring them to $7.25.
Does Mississippi have local income taxes or state disability tax?
No. No Mississippi city or county taxes wages, and there's no state disability or paid leave deduction. Unemployment insurance is paid only by employers.
Are 401(k) contributions pre-tax in Mississippi?
Yes. Traditional 401(k) and Section 125 deductions lower Mississippi taxable wages. A $150 biweekly 401(k) contribution on a $60,000 salary cuts Mississippi withholding from $64 to $58.
Will Mississippi's income tax go away?
The 2025 law cuts the rate to 3.75% in 2027, 3.5% in 2028, 3.25% in 2029 and 3% in 2030. After that, more cuts happen only if state revenue meets set targets, with the goal of eventually reaching zero.
How do I calculate take-home pay in Mississippi?
Start with gross pay and subtract pre-tax deductions. Figure federal withholding and FICA. Then annualize Mississippi wages, subtract the standard deduction and exemptions, tax everything above $10,000 at 4%, divide by pay periods and round to the dollar. Subtract post-tax deductions to get take-home pay.
