North Dakota uses your federal filing status from step 2. Withholding is 0% up to $57,625 single, $57,500 married or $78,475 head of household, then 1.95%, then 2.5%, rounded to the nearest dollar. A pre-2020 W-4 subtracts $5,050 per allowance first and uses the single table for head of household.

2026 calculation methodology

Federal withholding uses the 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction for your Form W-4 filing status, with Step 2(c), Step 3 and Step 4 inputs. North Dakota withholding follows the 2026 state tables: annualized wages (minus $5,050 per allowance for a pre-2020 W-4) are taxed at 0% up to $57,625 single, $57,500 married or $78,475 head of household, then 1.95% and 2.5%, divided by pay periods and rounded to the nearest dollar, plus any extra amount. Social Security is 6.2% up to $184,500 and Medicare is 1.45%, plus 0.9% above $200,000. See the worked example and test cases below.

What You Should Know About North Dakota Paychecks

North Dakota has the lightest income tax of any state that taxes wages. Since 2024 there are just three rates: 0%, 1.95% and 2.5%. Withholding in 2026 is $0 until annual wages pass $57,625 for a single employee, so many North Dakota paychecks have no state tax at all.

There's no state W-4. Your employer uses the filing status on your federal Form W-4 and the 2026 North Dakota tables, then rounds to the whole dollar. On a $60,000 salary that's $2 a paycheck; on $100,000 it's $32.

North Dakota has no city or county income tax and no state disability or paid leave deductions. Minnesota and Montana residents who work here pay tax only to their home state.

2026 North Dakota Withholding Tables

These are the 2026 annual tables your employer applies to annualized wages after pre-tax deductions. The table is chosen by the filing status on your federal W-4.

2026 North Dakota annual withholding tables
Filing status on federal W-4 0% on wages up to 1.95% on wages from 2.5% on wages over
Single or married filing separately$57,625$57,625 to $258,450$258,450 (plus $3,916.09)
Married filing jointly$57,500$57,500 to $168,525$168,525 (plus $2,164.99)
Head of household$78,475$78,475 to $289,675$289,675 (plus $4,118.40)
Bonuses and other supplemental payFlat 1.5% when paid separately
Where the 0% line falls per paycheck: Biweekly, North Dakota withholding starts once taxable pay passes about $2,216 single, $2,212 married or $3,018 head of household. Anything under that, and your stub shows $0 for North Dakota. The married line is lower than you might expect because each spouse's employer withholds separately; couples with one earner often end up with a refund.

Federal W-4 Choices and Your North Dakota Paycheck

North Dakota has no state withholding form, so your federal W-4 drives the state line too. Here's what each choice does to a $60,000 biweekly paycheck and a $100,000 one.

Effect of W-4 choices on North Dakota withholding (2026, biweekly)
W-4 choice ND tax at $60,000 ND tax at $100,000 Take-home at $100,000
Single, 2020 or later W-4$2.00$32.00$3,013.38
Married filing jointly$2.00$32.00$3,226.07
Head of household$0.00$16.00$3,167.15
Single, pre-2020 W-4 with 2 allowances$0.00$24.00$3,021.38
Single, plus $10 extra$12.00$42.00$3,003.38
Minnesota or Montana resident (NDW-R)$0.00$0.00$3,045.38
How to read this: At $100,000, married filing jointly shows the same North Dakota tax as single because the two 0% thresholds are almost identical; the take-home difference comes from federal tax. Head of household has a much higher 0% line. On an old W-4, each allowance takes $5,050 off annual wages, about $4 a paycheck at the 1.95% rate.

What North Dakota Tax Really Costs by Salary

North Dakota withholding by filing status, biweekly pay, 2020 or later W-4 and no pre-tax deductions.

North Dakota withholding by salary (2026)
Salary Single per paycheck Single per year Share of gross Married per paycheck Head of household per paycheck
$50,000$0$00.00%$0$0
$60,000$2$520.09%$2$0
$75,000$13$3380.45%$13$0
$100,000$32$8320.83%$32$16

$250,000$144$3,7441.50%$162$129
$300,000$191$4,9661.66%$210$168
Why married pays more at the top: The married 2.5% bracket starts at $168,525, well below single's $258,450, so a single high earner on a married W-4 has more withheld. That's by design: it keeps two-earner couples from underwithholding.

Keep the whole picture in mind: At $60,000, North Dakota takes about $3,100 a year less than Minnesota. Border commuters don't gain from it, though: reciprocity means a Moorhead resident working in Fargo still pays Minnesota tax, and a Fargo resident working in Moorhead pays North Dakota's.

How to Calculate Your North Dakota Paycheck

A North Dakota paycheck goes from gross pay to take-home pay in four steps. The state step is a three-bracket table, which this calculator runs for you.

1

Calculate gross pay

Divide salary by pay periods, or multiply the hourly rate by regular hours and add overtime at 1.5 times the rate after 40 hours in a week.

4

Calculate North Dakota tax

Annualize wages, apply the 2026 table for your federal filing status, divide by pay periods and round to the nearest dollar.

North Dakota Withholding Worked Example: $100,000 Salary, Biweekly

The $60,000 paycheck at the top of this page only just crosses the 0% line, so here's the 2026 method run by hand on a $100,000 salary: federal Single, 2020 or later W-4, biweekly pay and no pre-tax deductions.

Step-by-step 2026 North Dakota withholding on a $100,000 biweekly salary
Step Calculation Result
1. Annualize wages$3,846.15 times 26$99,999.90
2. Pick the tableSingle, 2020 or later W-40% up to $57,625
3. Apply the 1.95% bracket($99,999.90 minus $57,625) times 1.95%$826.31 per year
4. Divide by pay periods$826.31 divided by 26$31.78
5. Round to the nearest dollarAs the state instructions require$32.00
What it means for take-home pay: Gross pay of $3,846.15 minus $506.54 federal income tax, $238.46 Social Security, $55.77 Medicare and $32.00 North Dakota tax leaves $3,013.38. At $60,000 the same steps give $1.78, which rounds to $2.

North Dakota Minimum Wage and Overtime in 2026

North Dakota's minimum wage matches the federal rate. Pay in much of the state runs well above it, so the table also shows a higher-wage field job.

North Dakota minimum wage and pay rules
Rule Amount or requirement What it means for a paycheck
Minimum wage$7.25 an hour$290 weekly gross at 40 hours; $0 North Dakota tax; $267.81 take-home
Tipped employees$4.86 an hour cash wageTips must bring pay to at least $7.25
$38 an hour, 40 hours plus 10 overtime, weekly$2,090 weekly gross$19 North Dakota tax; $1,621.12 take-home
Overtime1.5 times the regular rate after 40 hours a weekEnter overtime hours in hourly mode
Overtime example: $35 an hour for 80 regular and 10 overtime hours biweekly is $3,325 gross. North Dakota withholding is $22 and take-home pay is $2,656.76. To total a week of punches first, use our time card calculator with overtime.

North Dakota Paycheck Tax Calculator: How ND Withholding Works

A North Dakota paycheck calculator mostly comes down to federal tax, because the state line is small or zero for most workers. When it does apply, you'll see it as ND SIT or ND state withholding. Our pay stub abbreviations list explains the other codes.

Federal Withholding for North Dakota Paychecks

Federal withholding uses your Form W-4 and the 2026 federal brackets. The calculator supports filing status, Step 2(c), Step 3 credits and Step 4(a), 4(b) and 4(c). If you claim the new overtime or tips deductions, our W-4 Step 4(b) worksheet guide shows how to enter them, and our 2026 federal tax withholding guide covers the rest.

Working Across State Lines

North Dakota has reciprocal agreements with Minnesota and Montana. Residents of those states file Form NDW-R with a North Dakota employer and have only their home state's tax withheld. There's no agreement with South Dakota, but South Dakota doesn't tax wages, so a South Dakotan working in North Dakota pays North Dakota tax and a North Dakotan working in South Dakota still owes North Dakota tax at filing time.

Bonuses

When a bonus is paid separately, North Dakota lets employers withhold a flat 1.5%. Federal withholding (usually a flat 22%) and FICA apply too. See why bonuses are taxed so high.

Employer Payroll Costs in North Dakota

Employers pay state unemployment insurance to Job Service North Dakota on each employee's wages up to the yearly wage base, set at 70% of the state's average wage ($46,600 for 2026). None of it comes out of your pay. At year-end, our W-2 form generator can use the same wage and withholding totals.

Why Your Actual North Dakota Paycheck May Differ

This calculator is a close estimate, not your employer's payroll run. The W-4 on file, benefit elections and a 27th biweekly payday in some years can move the result a little, and wages near the 0% threshold can flip between $0 and a few dollars. Three-paycheck months change monthly cash flow but not the tax on each check. For a full checklist, see why your paycheck is lower than expected.

North Dakota Paycheck Calculator by Pay Frequency

This page also works as a weekly, biweekly, semimonthly or monthly North Dakota payroll calculator. The annual salary stays the same, but gross pay and withholding on each check change with the number of pay periods. See our pay period guide for how the schedules differ.

24Semimonthly$3,265.17 net

Figures use a $100,000 salary, federal Single, a 2020 or later W-4 and no voluntary deductions. North Dakota tax is $16 weekly, $32 biweekly, $34 semimonthly and $69 monthly. Because each check rounds to the dollar, the yearly total differs by a few dollars between schedules.

Update log: September 25, 2026: rewrote this page and fixed the calculator. The old version treated North Dakota as a state with no income tax and always showed $0, which is wrong above the 0% threshold: $32 per paycheck at $100,000 and $191 at $300,000. The calculator now runs the 2026 tables by filing status, supports pre-2020 W-4 allowances and extra withholding, and rounds to the dollar. We added the tables, a W-4 comparison, tax by salary, a state comparison, a worked example and the test cases above. We re-check this page whenever North Dakota or the IRS publishes new tables, and at least once a year each January.

North Dakota Paycheck Calculator FAQ

Does North Dakota have a state income tax?
Yes, but it's the lowest of any state that taxes wages. For 2026 the rates are 0%, 1.95% and 2.5%, and withholding is $0 until annual wages pass $57,625 for single employees, $57,500 for married and $78,475 for head of household. There are no city or county income taxes.
How much tax is taken out of a North Dakota paycheck?
On a $60,000 salary paid biweekly, filing single, $371.62 comes out of each $2,307.69 paycheck: $193.08 federal income tax, $143.08 Social Security, $33.46 Medicare and $2 North Dakota income tax. That leaves $1,936.07. At $100,000 North Dakota withholding is $32 per paycheck.
Why is my North Dakota withholding $0?
If your annual wages after pre-tax deductions are under $57,625 (single), $57,500 (married) or $78,475 (head of household), the 2026 tables withhold nothing. A $60,000 earner who puts $150 per paycheck into a 401(k) drops below the line and has $0 withheld.
Does North Dakota have its own W-4?
No. North Dakota uses your federal Form W-4 filing status. For a 2020 or later W-4, the employer applies annual wages to the table for your status with no allowances. For a W-4 from before 2020, each allowance subtracts $5,050 a year first, and head of household uses the single table.
Can I have extra North Dakota tax withheld?
Yes. Ask your employer to withhold an extra dollar amount each paycheck. That's worth doing if you have other income, a working spouse or wages near a bracket line, because the 0% bracket means little or nothing is withheld during the year.
Why is my North Dakota tax a whole dollar amount?
The North Dakota withholding instructions round the per-paycheck amount to the nearest whole dollar. That's why a $60,000 biweekly paycheck shows $2 instead of $1.78.
How are bonuses taxed in North Dakota?
North Dakota lets employers withhold a flat 1.5% on bonuses and other supplemental pay paid separately. Federal withholding, usually a flat 22%, and FICA apply too.
What is North Dakota's minimum wage in 2026?
North Dakota follows the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. Tipped employees can be paid $4.86 an hour if tips bring them to $7.25. Overtime is 1.5 times the regular rate after 40 hours a week.
Are 401(k) contributions pre-tax in North Dakota?
Yes. Traditional 401(k) and Section 125 deductions lower North Dakota taxable wages. A $300 biweekly 401(k) contribution on a $100,000 salary cuts North Dakota withholding from $32 to $26.
Do I pay North Dakota tax if I live in Minnesota or Montana?
No. North Dakota has reciprocal agreements with Minnesota and Montana. Residents of those states who work in North Dakota give their employer a reciprocity form (NDW-R) and pay tax only to their home state. North Dakota residents working in those states do the same with that state's form.
How do I calculate take-home pay in North Dakota?
Start with gross pay and subtract pre-tax deductions. Figure federal withholding and FICA. Then annualize your wages, apply the 2026 North Dakota table for your federal filing status (0% up to the threshold, then 1.95%, then 2.5%), divide by pay periods and round to the nearest dollar. Subtract post-tax deductions to get take-home pay.
